Miles photograph collection consists of only three basic subject matter areas: 19 photos of a tour of Petra; 48 photos of a tour of Turkey and six photos (all badly damaged by mildew and water-soiled) of: a profile of Lieutenant General Nelson A. Miles; Buffalo Bill Cody and Major General Miles at Pine Ridge, 1891; Buffalo Bill Cody, Captain Frank Baldwin, Major General Miles and others at Pine Ridge, 1891; unidentified men from Pine Ridge; badly damaged photo of Major General Miles on horseback; badly damaged photo of a Japanese delegation in Washington, DC. Although this collection does not reflect the long and significant career of General Miles, it is a source to see what Petra and Turkey looked like around the turn of the 20th century.

Miles was born in Westminster, Massachusetts, on his family's farm. He worked in Boston, read military history, and mastered military principles and techniques, including battle drills. Miles was working as a crockery store clerk in Boston when the American Civil War began. He entered the Union Army as a volunteer on September 9, 1861, and fought in many crucial battles.
